THE PROPHET

And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, speak to us of children.
And he said:
Your children are not your children
They are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
They though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of to-morrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinate, and he bends you with his might that his arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the Archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so he loves also the bow that is stable.

Speed Reading

today I decided to tackle one of my weaknesses and improve on it.
I have never been a fast reader of english. I don't know why but it can be due to the fact that I've never used english much before I got into University or maybe because I usually skim read my books because I never have the time to read everything.
So today I walked in to a bookstore and looked for the most attractive speed-reading book they have, ie the shortest one, and decided that I am going to try it and see how it goes. Until now I haven't had the time to read anything from it so I'll do that over the next few days and keep you updated on the progress.

Camel Beauty Contest

Interesting Video I found in youtube about a Camel Beauty contest that took place in Saudi. I've never heard of such a thing happening before and to be honest I don't know when it took place.
I personally like the part where the guy with the big sunglasses describes what things the judges look for in a Camel. I did not understand half of what he said and it wasn't even translated in the subtitles.

Enjoy

Greatest arab poems ... according to me

One of my faverout poets of the new arab age Bshara Alkhory .. I'm not usually a big fan of poetry but hey I'm an arab after all and it runs in the blood...

This is my attempt to translate a couple of pieces of his poetry ...

She complained of poverty and cried pearls that fell off her eyelids and scattered
I replied, while looking at her tears " Poverty!...while you have all those jewels?

Deliver the news to her if you ever reach her territories. That I have died in love for her as a sacrifice ...
And mention me with all the good things around her. in the hope that she will cry on me ... just hoping...
And escort her to my soil as my bones crave being stepped on by her feet ...

Hope you enjoy it ..

PS: I tried to do as much literal translation as possible so it would not lose its beauty. But it still did ... sounds a 100 times better in Arabic. Feel free to add your comments

Caffeinne Junkie

After working on my first Arabic lesson for 4 hours last night ... I woke up really late today .. only one thing can get me the energy I need to move is a couple of shots of espresso served in my favorite black and while demitazza

Did you know...

Coffee was known in Europe as the "Arabian Wine" when it was first introduced in the 17th century

Simply Arabic Take one!

Ok everyone ... this is my first attempt to make something useful with my Macbook.
I spent the last 4 hours playing around with GarageBand and iMovie HD to put this together.

It is an Arabic 101 lesson for english speakers. I got sick of editing after 4 hours so sorry if the quiality is not super.

Let me know what you think. I'm thinking of making more of those.

Gone in 105 seconds!

Today I was sent a link from one of my friends about the robbery that happened in Wafi Center in Dubai. 2 Audi A8s (if I'm not mistaken) drove into the shopping center with 6-8 people inside broke into a Jewellery store and after 105 seconds drove away with 56 Million Dh worth of Jewellery!
They suspect that the gang is part of the Russain Mafia! I personally don't know about that but I believe that maybe Arabs should easy off on showing off too much.

You show off too much... someone will try and steal what you got! Simple rule of living...

Nice view...

Lately I've been trying to push my self more and more to spend more time in Hospital and learn stuff. After all It is my last year and I Should be at a better level. The Tax of doing that however is time, and time= sleep+ rest+ social life. Not the best thing to do but I guess I wasted the last 5 years in Med School doing those things so maybe I should spend more time on developing my self Medically.
But you see there is a bright side to spending that much time in hospital and leaving late at night, you can see views like these. Never realized it looked that good!

El laberinto del fauno

This weeks movie experince is a bit different. It is not a main stream hollywood movie. It is the spanish fairy tale, not for children, movie. The movie takes you to fairy tales land and make you live a simple story without feeling shy about it. Best of all, realized at the end that reading the subtitles was not that hard and it did not interfere with following the scenes. Fantastic movie and should not be missed.

Last day in Motueka

Hi again everyone,
sorry again for not being very good with the blog. Recently I've been having some problems with my internet. ISP and Telecom driving me mad but not my main story for today. As the title says it's my last day in Motueka, a town in the north of the South Island of NZ. I'm doing a rural GP attachment here and it has been an unforgetable experince. Country lifestyle is different from what I am used to and I have to admit that I never thought I would enjoy it. Host GP and rest of practice staff were amazing, they made it very easy for me to get back into the medical student life after my 3 months of exams/holiday. I'll leave u with a photo from there, The lost land from "Adnan wa leena" Motueka!

The 10/90 Principle

This is something i received via email last year and would like to share with you.

The 90/10 Principle
Author: Stephen Covey Management Guru
Have you read this before?
Discover the 90/10 Principle. It will change your life (at least the way you react to situations). What is this principle?
10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by
how you react. What does this mean?

We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%.

How? By your reaction. You cannot control a red light., but you can control your reaction. Don't let people fool you; YOU can control how you react.

Let's use an example.
You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just what happened. What happens when the next will be determined by how you react. You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over.

She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus. Your spouse must leave immediately for work.

You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit. After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to coming home, When you arrive home, you find small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter.

Why? Because of how you reacted in the morning. Why did you have a bad day?

A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?

The answer is " D".

You had no control over what happened with the coffee.
How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day. Here is
what could have and should have happened.

Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say, "It's ok honey, you just need, to be more careful next time". Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how good the day you are having.

Notice the difference?
Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended different.

Why? Because of how you REACTED.
You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% was determined by your reaction.

Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle.
If someone says something negative about you, don't be a sponge. Let the attack roll off like water on glass. You don't have to let the negative comment affect you! React properly and it will not ruin your day. A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out etc.

How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic? Do you lose your temper? Pound on the steering wheel? A friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off)
Do you curse? Does your blood pressure skyrocket? Do you try and bump them? WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work? Why let the cars ruin your drive?
Remember the 90/10 principle, and do not worry about it.

You are told you lost your job. Why lose sleep and get irritated? It will work out. Use your worrying energy and time into finding another job.The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the day. Why take out your frustration on the flight attendant? She has no control over what is going on. Use your time to study, get to know the other passenger.

Why get stressed out? It will just make things worse. Now you know the 90-10 principle. Apply it and you will be amazed at the results. You will lose nothing if you try it.

The 90-10 principle is incredible. Very few know and apply this principle.

The result? Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and heartache.

We all must understand and apply the 90/10 principle.

It CAN change your life

hope it inspires those how need some motivation

A Taste of Arabic Poetry

I am one of those who believe some things can not be translated from one language to another. They are just not transcultural. My bi-lingual friends and I always find amusement in literally translating expressions and jokes between languages. Things like "no extra upon you" and " The envalops are Cairo" or my personal favourite "My Mothers vice presedent" all of which make absalotely no sence unless you understand arabic and are familiar with the Gulf culture.

Leaving all that aside every now and then ,within my mind, I try and translate some peices of Arabic Poetry. Sometimes this only goes as far as one line other times it is a whole poem. This is one of my attempts to do that what ended up being type on my computer.

I really love this one so I hope that it is not ruined by my translation. It is written by Nizar Qabbani and was preformed by AbdulHalem Hafez as a song. It is called "Qariaat AlFinjan" or The fortune Teller and it goes like this:

The Fortune Teller:
She sat down with fear in her eyes..
Staring at my flipped cup..
She said ..
My son ... don’t be sad ..
Love is what is written for you..
My son...
He has sacrificed his soul..
The one who died on the religion of his love!
Your cup is a terrifying life
and your life is journeys and wars ..
You’re going to love a lot my son..
You’re going to die a lot my son ...
You’re going to fall in love with all the ladies on earth ..
And you’re going to return like a defeated king..
...
In your life my son there is a lady ...
Her eyes are wonders of the worshipped one..
Her mouth is drawn like the end of a vine branch ..
Her laugh is melodies and roses ...
And the wild gipsy hair is traveling throughout the life ..
She might become a lady my son ...
That the heart fall in love with ..
She is the life
But your sky is raining ..
And your way is blocked .. it’s blocked ..
Since the love of your heart .... my son
Is sleeping in well guarded castle ..
And the castle is huge my son ..
And dogs are guarding it along with the guards
And the princess of your heart is sleeping..
The one who enters her room ..
The one who asks for her hand ..
The one who gets close to the fence of her garden ....is lost ..
The one who tries to undo her hair ..
My son ..
Is lost ... is lost ..
...
I’ve read the future and stars so many times ..
But I have never read a cup the looked like your cup...
I’ve never seen my son ...
Any miseries that looked like yours
Your destiny ... is to walk forever ..
In love ... on the edge of sword ..
And to stay lonely like the shells on the beach..
And to stay sad like the falling leaves ...
Your destiny is to keep going forever ..
In the sea of love with no boats ...
And love millions of times ...
And to return like a removed King !

My Latest News

Hi again..

for those of you who have been waiting for my updates... sorry for not being so good with them. I haven't been spending much time infront of my computer lately. I think I'm just suffering from the so called Postexam syndrome. Yup I finished my exams last wednesday! two days after my birthday, which only Cindy and Nathalie remembered so thanks for the effort girls. Everyone else ... thank you too for not remembering! These days the rule is: Lots of free time = time to do nothing. I really like it and I'm really enjoying it. I'm using this time flat hunting and trying to see if it's worth going home for 2-3 weeks after I get the results of my exams. No it is not time to go jumping all over the place yet. It is just a thought like the 5000 miles trip ... Just a thought. wait and see where it takes me too.

Twentysomething Arabic Version

A Few weeks ago a good friend of mine introduced me to Jamie Cullum, the British Jazz/pop signer. When Soraya introduce me to him she put a DVD of his Blenheim Palace concert and skipped a few song and asked me to listen carefully to the one she chose. Well Guess what?? I loved it!!

The song was "Twentysomething" it summarized the whole beginning of real life experience for those who are living in developed countries. Now most of you would be wondering what does that have to do with Saudi Espresso?? well thinking back at it I figured out why Songs and Music are considered Haram in our society!!! Yup I found it !!

It is because no song ever expressed what those who sing it really feel! Well lets think about it for a second.. how many young arabic singers sing professionally? and from those how many would leave all the ancient arabic talent in love poetry and sing about the thoughts and the experiences of the young generation ?

Arabic singers fall into two broad categories according to me; those who decided to take it professionally and provide us with outstanding pieces of music talking about amazing love stories, which by the way are against our social norm, or those who decided to provide us with a TV friendly striptease show classified as YTC (yet to be classified).

No wonder I am listening to Western music! I'm looking for something that express what I feel not something that tease me about things I'm only allowed to dream about! This is why arabic music is haram in our society ... because it gives you false dreams about things that will never happen to you if you live in such society, except for a few exceptions of course!

If I'm going to listen to arabic music again something have to change then: The social norm or the context of the music. Wonder if any of them would change?

Sulaiman
